With the 2020 race season passing us by, we wanted to mark the occasion of what would have been our 4th ever STARMAN Night Triathlon. And that’s where Virtually STARMAN was born.
Starting at midnight on Friday 14th August, STARMEN and STARWOMEN from across the country gathered on Zoom, swim caps and glow sticks at the ready, for a virtual land swim (ok, a circuits class with disco lights and a STARMAN playlist!).
Many then headed off into the night for their own 56-mile cycle and 13-mile run. Others took the whole weekend to complete all their disciplines, and some even added night swims to go full STARMAN!
Whilst it wasn’t exactly the year we had hoped for, the athletes made the most of it and we all had a lot of fun and banter!
2019 STARMAN finisher Mhairi said:
” Despite not actually seeing other competitors face to face it was still a fab event and we all kept in touch via the competitors Facebook chat to let others know what stage we were at and how we were getting on. Brilliantly organised event, with fab support and a great bunch of folk!”
Alicja Weyer, from Perth Triathlon Club, went one step further (or two steps further?!) by completing three back to back STARMAN-distance triathlons! Starting at midnight on Friday and finishing on Monday morning, Alicja swam nearly 6km, cycled 270km, and ran 63km raising over £1200 for Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance.
“I had never done something like this before and this challenge has really helped me appreciate how much hard work and dedication it takes to do these sort of long endurance events…
Stay crazy and do the impossible (even when it’s painful).”
WELL DONE Alicja – that was a truly heroic effort and you can sponsor her here.
Congratulations also to Bee Leask who won a slot in 2021, and Jo Connell who won a Reindeer Sponsorship from the Cairngorm Reindeer Herd.
You can see some of the pictures our athletes sent in here.
WELL DONE to everyone who took part. If it has whetted your appetite, tickets for 2021 go on sale on MONDAY 24th AUGUST with an early bird discount! Set your alarms!
