Winter Strength Series: Run

Below is another run workout to help you build a strong base during this off season.

There is no reason to avoid speed work during the off season but now is the perfect time to play about with pace and have a bit of fun – Fartlek training is a great way to achieve that. Fartlek means “speed play” in Swedish, and these workouts should be intuitive and fun! Focus less on pace and more on your perceived effort.

Warm up
10 mins easy, including 10 bursts of a few seconds faster pace, sprinkled throughout!


Main Set – Fartlek should be a fast pace but ignore your watch and focus on effort.
2 mins Fartlek, 1 min easy
4 mins Fartlek, 2 mins easy
6 mins Fartlek, 3 mins easy
4 mins Fartlek, 2 mins easy
2 mins Fartlek, 1 min easy

Recovery
5 mins easy

As with any programme, do what you can and give yourself extra breaks or shorten if needed. Enjoy!
